Know The Difference
DOT vs. Non-DOT testing
The difference is not the specimen — it is the rulebook. DOT testing follows a federal procedure; Non-DOT testing follows the employer's written policy and any applicable state, local, contractual or collective-bargaining requirements.
| DOT testing | Non-DOT testing | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it applies to | Safety-sensitive employees covered by a U.S. Department of Transportation agency (for example FMCSA, FAA, FRA, FTA, PHMSA or USCG). | Anyone an employer chooses to test under its own workplace policy, plus individuals testing on their own behalf. |
| What is tested | The panel specified by the federal regulation for that agency. | The panel the employer selects. 5-panel and 10-panel are the most common requests. |
| Paperwork | The Federal Drug Testing Custody and Control Form (CCF). | A standard chain-of-custody form. |
| Procedure | Collection steps are prescribed by 49 CFR Part 40 and must be followed exactly. | Collection follows accepted practice and the employer's written policy. |
| Results review | Non-negative results are reviewed by a Medical Review Officer before release. | Depends on the employer's policy; MRO review is often used but not always required. |
Regulatory requirements are set by the agency that governs your role and by your employer's policy — not by us. Bring the paperwork you were given and we will follow the procedure it specifies. If you are not sure whether your test is DOT or Non-DOT, call and we will help you work it out.
What We Collect
Collections handled properly.
Urine collection is the standard for most workplace and court-directed testing. Other specimen types may be available depending on what your paperwork specifies.
- Urine collections — the standard specimen for most workplace, DOT and court-directed testing.
- Observed collections where the ordering authority requires them.
- Hair and oral fluid collection may be available on request — call to confirm before you travel.
- Chain-of-custody documentation completed with the collection, where the test requires it.
- Split specimen handling where the form calls for it.
Testing Reasons
Common reasons employers test
01
Pre-employment
Testing a candidate before a start date, usually once a conditional offer has been made.
02
Random
Unannounced selections from a defined pool. Employers running a random program can send selected employees to us as they come up.
03
Post-accident
Testing after a workplace incident, within the window your policy or regulation specifies.
04
Reasonable suspicion
Testing based on documented, observable indicators — usually recorded by a trained supervisor.
05
Return-to-duty
Testing before an employee resumes safety-sensitive work following a violation, as directed by the process governing their return.
06
Follow-up
A scheduled series of unannounced tests after a return to duty, set by the directing authority.
Your Visit
What to expect
01
Bring photo ID
A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID is required. Without it the collection usually cannot proceed.
02
Bring your paperwork
If an employer, court, attorney or agency sent you, bring whatever they gave you — a form, an authorisation number or a printed order.
03
Check in
Tell the front desk who sent you and what you are here for. We confirm the test before anything is collected.
04
Complete the collection
A trained collector explains the process, then completes it in a private area along with the required documentation.
About results. Turnaround depends on the test ordered and, where applicable, on Medical Review Officer review. Results are released only to the person or organisation authorised to receive them. If an employer ordered your test, the result goes to the employer.
